I recently noticed one of the ex-Bush administration officials touting the effectiveness of the new border fence in reducing the number of people illegally crossing the border, citing census statistics that the number of foreign-born people living in the U.S. has declined for the first time in decades.
But I don’t think the ill-conceived border fence is the primary factor. Rather, it is the lack of jobs available in this recessionary economy. And after the Obama administration addresses immigration reform soon, the number of border crossers will probably diminish even more, as I expect there to be strict penalties against employers who hire “illegals”.
This helps to illustrate why One Town at a Time exists. The vast majority of these workers come from the thousands of small, rural villages throughout Mexico. Our goal is to help the villages become self-sustainable, providing an environment that encourages efficiency, hope and the survival of the nuclear family.
Tourism is the major money generator in 3rd world countries. The next time you visit Mexico, get out and travel the back roads. This is where the heart and soul of Mexico reside. We will be building our first village web sites this November, with photos and video footage.
